IMPACTS OF ADHD

It’s hard to believe that soon the time for parent-teacher conferences will be upon us. For many, it is a time of anxiety as we prepare our thoughts and possible concerns. Parents with an ADHD child should be asking themselves, how do we extract the most value out of a 15-minute parent-teacher conference? The type of value that can truly provide children with ADHD the school support they need to succeed. The following parent-teacher conference tips will benefit both the parents and children...

I hope you all are having a great summer! I feel like once we get beyond July 4 life becomes a downward slide to end of summer and start of school! Along with the fast paced summer comes the desire that your child will be ready for school in September. Do you have concerns that were arising last year? Give it some thought this summer. I see a lot of issues in the classroom that are related to behavior. Are behavior charts used in your child's classroom? Do you see success? Sadly they many...

I hope everyone has had a fun start to the summer! The fourth of July is here already! For some this is exciting. For others with ADHD, it can be a time of stress: noise, people, no structure. It's ok. Just let that kid enjoy what he can enjoy and remove from chaos when needed. I remember going through that. A couple of my kids were very stressed when we were in that environment of fireworks. It is tough for them to regulate in general and add this where they feel out of control and you see...

The end of the school year is upon us! Think about the year and what if any changes need to be made for the fall. I recently did a podcast about behavior and how it really is a form of communication and even a cry for help. Click the link! As the end of the year approaches, think about how the year was for your child. One of the issues that I see happening is frequent requests for pickups for your child with ADHD due to behavior. Do you know what to do? The school is denying FAPE and there are things that you the parent can initiate. I made a pdf describing three actions you can do when this is happening. Even if it's happening now, consider these so you can make sure next year is positive for your child. Click on the link for...

As spring progresses, I am sure many of you continue to meet in IEP meetings. Are there areas of struggle for your child that concern you? If there are, be sure to make it known. We parents many times know in our gut that things are not right. But we continue to feel that the school knows best. Or that we feel uncomfortable to speak up. Or that our child just needs to do better! Follow your gut and document your concerns in a parent concerns letter. It's so important to get things set for the...

I thought I would check in during what may be a busy time as spring begins and annual meetings occur to go over current IEP's: Both checking continued eligibility and status of current goals. How prepared do you feel? Make sure that you know that being prepared includes two areas: documented concerns sent to the team prior to the meeting, any changes you think are needed in the parent input statement as well as changes in the present levels stated in the IEP from the beginning of the year....

POV: I got a call from a frustrated mom prior to an annual IEP meeting. Her son’s struggles are not being addressed. Points Discussed: 1. Email to team that discusses previous IEP meeting: concerns discussed, changes to be made as a result. This would be the basis for the upcoming meeting. 2. Write a parent input statement to reinforce child’s strengths and desire for future goals. OUTCOME: IEP goal revision that aligned with parent input statement and addressed both strengths and weaknesses...
